Is anyone too young / too old to box?
If you're old enough to be using our website or young enough that your eyesight can cope reading it, you're ok! Our current members range from ages 13 to 44.
Do I have to get into the ring and 'spar'?
We don't make any of our members do anything they don't want to do, that includes sparring. It is a great way to see progression of both your skills and technique and your physical fitness however, it is certainly not necessary to your workout and is 100% optional. Our coaches will push you to a level within the scope of your ability and within the boundaries of what you feel comfortable with.
Do I have to be in good shape to start boxing?
Before they start many of our new members have had little formal exercise training and most are pretty out of shape. Regardless of your fitness level we can get you started, the hardest part is getting yourself through the door for the first workout. Once you've done that you'll be hooked. Remember, when starting any exercise program, if you haven't worked out in a while we recommend you consult your doctor first.
If I'm a girl, will I feel out of place?
Actually the boxing workout is becoming increasingly popular amongst women. More and more women are discovering that it's a great way to get in shape, lose weight and increase self-confidence. At present, approximately 25% of our members are women.
Is boxing safe?
Training for boxing is very safe however it should be noted that it does include some high level exercise which some people may find exhausting. Sparring (actual boxing) is a full contact activity and therefore runs the potential risk of injury. It is of course entirely optional and is by no means essential to your workout. At the Ring London Boxing Club, sparring is always held under the safest guidelines and in a controlled environment. Our coaches work closely with members to ensure a sparring session is a safe opportunity to improve your technique and to exercise.
What equipment do I need?
One of the nice things about boxing is that the equipment needs are minimal. You'll need some hand wraps (available at the club for $10), and you'll need to wear standard workout clothes and shoes. You'll need a mouth guard if you intend to try sparring. All other equipment such as skipping ropes and bag gloves are provided. Many members choose to purchase their own bag gloves and boxing shoes after training for a few weeks which are also for sale through the club.
How much is a class?
Your first class is always free. Rates are $50 per month. Members are also required to become a member of the Canadian Amateur Boxing Association at a cost of $12 per year. Ask about multiple family member rates.
